Free English Writing and Editing Help for NCKU Students

The NCKU Eagle project is currently offering NCKU students free one-on-one writing and editing help from native English-speaking editors every day from 10:10 am – 4:10 pm from now until January 15th.

All you need to do is go to the NCKU Eagle office and sign up. Simple as that! Directions to the office are at the bottom of this post.

The students I’ve helped in the past have brought me all kinds of different things. University applications, essays, diaries, resumes, theses… This offer is open to any NCKU student who wants help with writing – it doesn’t matter what kind.

Please note that the editors will not edit your work for you. We are here to help you improve your writing through one-on-one instruction and guidance.

So, if you need some help with your writing please stop by. If you know somebody that needs help, then please encourage them to come in. This is a great program, but if it students don’t use it, then the University may decide to stop it.

The NCKU Eagle Office is located in the Language Building, which is the building located between the NCKU lake (pond) and Kai Shan Rd. on the north side of the campus. The office is on the fifth floor in room 26504.

NCKU Anniversary 11/11

The NCKU anniversary falls annually on November 11. Every department is going to be involved in a parade on Guang Fu Campus, by the track. The IIMBA department always participates in this parade to show the strength and diversity of our department. If you have any traditional dress or ornaments from your country, please bring them to show the pride of your country. Please note that this is a mandatory event for juniors, and that all IMBA students are invited to attend.

What: Participate in a university parade.
When: 8:00 am on November 11^th, Wednesday.
Where: In front of the Department of Management
(The IMBA building). We will walk over to the track together.
Who: All IMBA students, mandatory for juniors.
What to bring: Traditional dress from your country.

Also, there will be a relay race at around 10am. We would to like to submit two teams of 15 people: a 15 member men’s team, and a 15 member women’s team. If you would like to participate in the race, please contact Alfredo at alfredodelaguardia@yahoo.com. A sign up sheet will also be available in the IMBA office from Monday, November 2^nd to Sunday, November 8^th. Please sign up early! Also, you can talk to Tommy or Alfredo for more details.

Learn how to use Endnote on Monday April 13th.

It’s going to be very important for writing your thesis that you know how to use, and fully understand this program. Lucky for you, the NCKU library will be hosting a training course for this program on Monday April 13th. One in Chinese, and another in English. We suggest you attend, valuable information will be presented.

By using EndNote, you can:
1.Search bibliographic databases on the Internet
2.Organize references, images, PDFs and other files
3.Construct your paper with built-in manuscript templates
4.Watch the bibliography and figure list appear as you write!

Thesis Formatting Presentations w/ Jojo

The student council would like to encourage all students who haven’t already attended a thesis formatting seminar to do so. Many people don’t know anything about the regulations and issues concerning their thesis and this is best opportunity to clarify some of those issues. Juniors, you may think that this doesnt apply to you, IT DOES. You dont want to wait until the last minute to get all the information about thesis issues. Once you get started with research you will have enough to do without worrying about formatting questions. This is your opportunity.

Jojo will be giving two seminars. The first on Thursday Feb 26th at 9am and the second on March 1st during the last two hours of SBM 2-4 pm.

The following is an email from Jojo concerning the seminars:

Following the required format for your IIMBA proposal and thesis is vital for your smooth sailing in the program (or a smoother sailing at least: if you do not follow regulations, it will not be approved until you do…however long it takes you). These skills can be developed during your reports in your other classes, so even if you are a junior, it is advised you come - as next year I (Jojo) will not be here to hold your hand, and you will be responsible to teach your juniors.

A few questions for you to consider:

Do you know how to easily find journal articles (useful and of quality)?
Do you know how to use the Thesis template and MS Word’s style function to ensure your formatting adheres to IIMBA’s strict format regulations?
[If you are using or would like to use EndNote]: Do you know how to use EndNote and ensure no errors in your citation format will occur?
Do you feel confident you can figure the above out by just using the step-by-step tutorials I have created and provided to you before (and are once again attached here)?

If you have answered ‘no‘ to one or more of the above questions I strongly urge you to attend one of the two seminars listed below. Perhaps you already attended one of my previous seminars – but if you are now going to do your proposal, or think a refresher would be helpful (because you perhaps have not started using the skills yet and have forgotten most of what was covered), you should come.

If you already sent your proposal to the format checkers and did a terrible job formatting (you know who you are!! I definitely know who you are~~), you MUST come to one of the seminars.

I have attached the ppt I will go through (I will be expanding on it of course), with some of the E-resource and other tricks; you are encouraged to print it out before you come to the seminar so you can take notes on it to highlight important issues. I have also attached a zip folder containing the template and the tutorials (if you have older versions – older than this February, please delete them and replace them with these; for the template the most updated one is v2!!).

If you would like to come to BOTH seminars (to imprint it in your memory), you are of course more than welcome to.

The seminars are below. If you want to just come for a specific portion of it (because you are a pro in the others) that is ok…but I do not guarantee the exact times will be followed (may be a bit faster, may be a bit slower).

Seminar I: Thursday, February 26, 9AM [as we do not have a class scheduled at that time]

9:10-10:00 E-Resources, finding articles, downloading articles, Journals/articles (good vs bad) and how to know the difference; adobe acrobat professional

10:10-11:00 EndNote (what it is, exporting citations, creating new references, vital aspects to be aware of, citing and editing sources in Word)

11:10-12:00 Word styles and formatting (importance of consistency, templates, styles function, Thesis template, other useful tips and tricks)

Seminar II: Sunday, March 1, last two hours of SBM (about 2-4pm or 2:30-4:30pm depending on when they take a break and when Dr. Pan hands it over to me)

1st hour: Thesis template (word styles function and other items that you must take note of…ie table of contents etc)

2nd hour: EndNote (what it is, exporting citations, creating new references, vital aspects to be aware of, citing and editing sources in Word)

If there are people who are there and want to go over E-Resources and all that we can stay an extra hour and go over it (if at least 7 people stay)

Promoting Academic Excellence – Writing and Publishing Academic Papers

To help the NCKU international students community with their academic goals the student council is organizing a series of lectures on “Promoting Academic Excellence”.

“Writing and Publishing Academic Papers” lecture will be given by NCKU PhD Business Administration student Mr. Michael Turton who has been doing academic editing for several years. This lecture will include an overview of reoccurring basic mistakes and misconceptions about writing and publishing academic papers and tips on how to best avoid or overcome those.

Time : Wednesday, 28th, 16:00.

Location: Business Administration building, 4th floor, room 62455.
